From: | The Commander Submarines, SEVENTH FLEET. |
To: | The Commander in Chief, UNITED STATES FLEET. |
Via: | The Commander, SEVENTH FLEET. |
Subject: | U.S.S. BERGALL (SS320) - Report of Third War |
Patrol - Comment on. | |
1. | The Third War Patrol of the Bergall under the command of Commander J. M. Hyde, U.S.N., was conducted in the LOMBOK STRAIT Area; and in the SOUTH CHINA SEA off the coats of INDO-CHINA. |
2. | The four attacks made in the LOMBOK STRAIT Area are covered in a separate report. |
3. | On 7 February, BERGALL made a successful attack on a convoy consisting of two tankers and four escorts. Six torpedoes were fired, and two hits were made in the first tanker, and one hit was made in the second. The success of this attack is noteworthy for several reasons; the water was glassy calm, several planes were in the air, and the two tankers were protected by four escorts. The initial diving position was about one mile off HONNAI POINT, chosen to insure that no traffic could get by without being attacked. The attack was excellently planned and executed. |
4. | On 13 February, BERGALL sighted a formation consisting of 2 BB in column with a CA on the port bow and one DD on the starboard bow of the leading BB, and one DD slightly abaft the beam of the second BB. The range on this high speed formation could be closed to a minimum of 4,800 yards submerged; but one hit was scored on one of the BB. A minor counter-attack followed. |
5. | The BERGALL is again commended upon her excellent material condition. Her record of material upkeep is outstanding, and is a pleasure to concur in Commander Submarine Squadron Twelve's comment upon the "thorough manner in which the BERGALL Crew corrected defects and casualties as soon as they became evident." |
6. | The award of the Submarine Combat Insignia is authorized for this patrol. |
